This episode takes place during the Democratic National Convention. In this episode, all the different democratic candidates are trying to figure out who should be whose Vice-Presidential candidate. In the end, Santos wins the nomination and makes Leo his Vice-Presidential candidate.
The 2024 Presidential election is currently kicking into full swing. Once again, the Republican nominee is former President Donald Trump and the Democratic nominee is current President Joe Biden. Now that Trump has the Republican nomination, people are speculating about who he will make his Vice President. Some of the contenders include South Carolina senator Tim Scott, South Dakota governor Kristi Noem, New York congresswoman Elise Stefanik, Arkansas governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Florida congressman Bryon Donalds, Vivek Ramaswamy, Kari Lake, and Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
It is generally accepted that President Biden will continue with Vice President Harris as his running mate. However, there have been a few voices saying President Biden should drop Harris from the ticket for someone more popular. Far more voices have been saying that Biden himself should drop out of the race so someone who has a better chance at winning in the general election can be made nominee, a sentiment that has only grown as polling continues to come out putting Trump ahead of Biden.
As seen in this episode, during the nominating convention, upsets can happen. Delegates don’t technically have to vote for the same person that the voters in their state’s primary voted for. This means that at the convention somebody else could be elected as the party’s nominee. Some people speculate that even though Biden and Trump are currently the nominees, they will not end up being the candidates this election, and believe that in at least one of the conventions a different candidate will be chosen.
In this episode, the idea of a “spoiler” is also brought up. A spoiler is someone who runs as a third candidate pulling away votes from one of the main candidates in a race. In this episode both Hoynes and Baker are spoilers. Currently, democrats are worrying about a spoiler in the 2024 election: Robert F. Kennedy Jr.. Kennedy is running as an independent candidate, and democrats worry about him pulling votes away from President Biden, allowing former President Trump to win the election. Like with former President Trump, people are speculating about who could be RFK’s Vice Presidential candidate.

“Who knew if we set our hair on fire and jumped up and down people would actually tune in to watch?”
-Leo
"About two hours ago. It's a free-for-all. I think Aaron Burr has got 20 votes."
-President Bartlet
"He's not gonna do it just because I tell him to, Leo. He’s his own man."
"And here I thought I’d found the last one.”
